A GMRS antenna needs to perform from 462-469 MHz. This one does not. Trying several different mount locations, the SWR varied between 2.01 and 2.78. What's worse, the analyzer shows that the minimum SWR occured well over 470 MHz - AFTER extending the whip as far as possible. (it should have been around 465.5 MHz) This antenna is just too short.

However a 1/2 wave GMRS isn't that long and is not ground plane dependent but if you want to use the low pro ghost antenna it should work fine. Height is king for VHF/UHF communications.

I bought a Laird ghost-style antenna and it works great on a fender mount. I am considering a Laird BB4503 15" 5/8 wave or a Laird TRAB4503 Phantom for my fender mount. This mount will allow you to run a bigger antenna to get extra signals like the Midland Ghost Antenna or the Rugged Radio Stealth Antenna. This mount has slots that are 1" apart, allowing you to use existing holes and hardware from your 2x1 roof rack load bars. Mar 24, 2010 · I tried the midland GMRS/FRS radio with helmet speakers and mic which worked fine on a recent trip in the Sierras at dirt road speeds but transiting on the freeway it sucked. At 65 MPH i couldn’t hear anything from my friends in my “support vehicle”. GMRS hands down over any CB set up. All my junk is getting the CB pulled as the GMRS is ~5 times more powerful and less than half the size. Plus the handhelds are reasonably size unlike CB handheld which mimic a backpack phone.
